Syrah from CHÂTEAU VALTICE became the champion of Mikulov subregion!

The judges of the National Wine Competition evaluated wines with grapes originating in the Mikulov wine sub-region. As the best wine, and therefore the Champion, they chose the red wine Syrah 2023, a selection of grapes from CHÂTEAU VALTICE - Wine Cellars

The Champion was also the winner of the dry red wine category and its producer - CHÂTEAU VALTICE Wine Cellars - also received a special prize in the form of a premium Seguin Moreau barrel, which was donated to the winner by the partner town of Mikulov.

"Our winning Syrah comes from Valtice, from the Kačisdorfské pole vineyard, which has a unique terroir and a south-western location right on the border with Austria. This unique vineyard is the southernmost vineyard in the country, so there is a lot of sunshine and optimal conditions for the maturation of varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Shiraz and Malbec. Varieties from which we are then able to produce great robust red wines of world quality," said David Št'astný, Director of CHÂTEAU VALTICE - Wine Cellars.

"We are very happy that we have beaten the famous "Pálava Rieslings" in the area around Pálava in the Mikulov region and with red wine. We are happy to break the myths that it is impossible to produce "big" red wine in Moravia. We have already managed to do this several times, for example in 2016 when we won the absolute champion of the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic with a red wine of the Merlot variety," adds David Št'astný.

Syrah (or also Shiraz) is a grape variety that is not yet well known in this country, but it is one of the most popular varieties in the world for the production of red wines.

The fact that wine made from this heat- and sun-demanding grape variety has surpassed all competitors in the Mikulov wine-growing region is testimony to the winemaker's ability and adaptability, but also to the fact that the South Moravia region is gradually moving into one of the best wine-growing locations in the world for the production of first-class red wines.

However, it was not only Syrah that reaped success, the judges also awarded other wines from CHÂTEAU VALTICE. Three wines won the Grand Gold Medal and another 13 wines were awarded the Gold Medal.
